by Carter Cook
SMYRNA, TN--The SMS girls and boys basketball teams had their first home game against Central Magnet middle school. I interviewed Coach Powell before the game, I asked Coach Powell about what her expectations were for her team this season. Coach Powell replied, "For each game to be progressively better". I also asked Coach Powell how she motivated her team. Her response was "Telling them positive things before and after games".
After tip-off the lady panthers struggled to get on the scoreboard going scoreless through the first quarter making the score 16-0. At the beginning of the second quarter the panthers put up a good fight with some good defense , then in the fast break the panthers got fouled and scored 1 out of 2 free-throws putting a point on the board. The lady panthers started to heat up when the panthers scored in the fast break and scored to points to make them down 12 points. The panthers put up more points and so did central ,and at the end of the half the score was 25-9
In the second half Central ran the score up and the Lady Panthers fell behind by a large amount but got back on their feet and scored a few more points. At the final buzzer, the Lady Panthers fell short.
Final 40-15
I interviewed Coach Hockenberry before the boys' game. I asked him what his expectations were for his team this season, and his response was "To play hard and get better every day".
To start off the Panthers were in a fast break and they got the layup. The Panthers showed no signs of stopping while going on a huge scoring spree. The Panthers were still scoring like crazy when central magnet scored their first points of the game. The Panthers played amazing defense to keep central under double digits for the whole first half. At the end of the half the Panthers were up 22-7
In the second half the Panthers played with the same intensity as the first half. The Panthers didn't slow down; they just kept scoring and scoring and playing good defense. Central finally started to score a little by little, but they came up short.
Final score 34-17, Panthers win.
